Fr. tenor, composer, and teacher. Opera début Paris 1825 (Almaviva in Il barbiere di Siviglia). Wrote opera La cabane du pêcheur, a failure at Versailles 1826. Had first success as dramatic ten. in Turin 1831 in Il Pirata. Sang Arnold in It. première of Guillaume Tell (Lucca 1831). Created several Donizetti roles, incl. Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor (Naples 1835). On return to Paris 1837, had immense success with Paris audiences. Created title‐role in Benvenuto Cellini (1838) and roles in works by Auber, Halévy, and Verdi. Sang in London 1844–5 (Edgardo). Taught at Paris Cons. 1842–50. Founded vocal sch., 1853. First great tenore di forza.
