Born a Turkish slave, was the concubine and then the freed wife of the Ayyubid ruler al-Salih Ayyubi. After her husband's death in 1249 and the murder of the heir apparent, she became the queen of Egypt in 1250, the second woman in Islamic history to rule in her own right.
