*Kett's rebellion in Norfolk in 1549 posed a formidable threat to the government of Protector Somerset. One relief force under William Parr, Lord Northampton was driven out of Norwich. In August Lord Warwick (Northumberland) was dispatched with a sizeable force, stiffened by German mercenaries. After heavy fighting on 27 August, Warwick offered pardon, which most of the peasants accepted.
