Brazilian statesman. He served as Minister of War before becoming President of Brazil (1946–51). Winning the presidency as the candidate of the Partido Social Democratico, Dutra had a new constitution adopted during his first year in office and promoted economic nationalism and industrialization. A conservative, he did not repudiate the idea of state participation in the economy.
