Ballet in one act with choreography by Robbins, music by Bernstein, sets by Ter-Arutunian, and costumes by Patricia Zipprodt. Premiered 16 May 1974 by New York City Ballet at New York's State Theater, with McBride and Tomasson. It is based on the play by Ansky about a Jewish girl who is possessed by the soul of her lover, and evokes the story's atmosphere and relationships via a series of dance episodes. Other versions of the same story include P. Lang's (mus. Meyer Kupferman and Joel Spiegelman, New York, 1975) and K. Brandstrup's (mus. Ian Dearden, London, 1988).
