A general term for any disease or malfunction of the autonomic nervous system which can manifest in a wide variety of ways. Familial dysautonomia (hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy type 3), is caused by mutations in the gene that encodes IκB-kinase associated protein. There is demyelination in nerves in various parts of the brain and loss of cells in autonomic ganglia.
