Russ. composer. His operas were upheld as models when Shostakovich was in disgrace with Soviet authorities for his Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District. Works incl. the operas Quiet Flows the Don (1935); Virgin Soil Upturned (1937); Blood of the People (1941); Nadezhda Svetlova (1943); and A Man's Destiny (1961). Also 3 pf. concs. (1932, 1934, 1945), sym.‐poem, songs, etc.
