Son of king Eardwulf, gained the throne c.808 and held it until his death c.840. Though his reign of about thirty-two years is the longest in Northumbrian or Bernician history, little is recorded, save his submission to Ecgberht of Wessex in 829. This suggests that the kingdom had ceased to play a major role in English affairs. Many coins from his reign have survived.
