a member of Falkland's circle at Great Tew. After the Restoration he became bishop of Worcester, then Salisbury. Microcosmographie (1628) was a collection of character sketches, chiefly by his hand, based on the model of Theophrastus. He analyses varied social and moral types, ranging from the plain country fellow to the pot poet, with wit, sympathy, and insight. See character‐writing.
