Disorders of sleep with insomnia or hypersomnia as the major symptom, causing clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning. See breathing-related sleep disorder, central alveolar hypoventilation syndrome, circadian rhythm sleep disorder, delayed sleep-phase syndrome, hypersomnia, insomnia, narcolepsy, primary hypersomnia, primary insomnia, sleep apnoea. Also called disorders of initiating and maintaining sleep (DIMS). See also cataplexy (1). Compare parasomnias, pseudoinsomnia. [From Greek dys- bad or abnormal + Latin somnus sleep]
