early-type galaxy

Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

An elliptical or lenticular galaxy—one without spiral arms. The name comes from the position of these galaxies in the tuning-fork diagram of galaxy shapes. For similar reasons, an Sa spiral galaxy may be referred to as an early-type spiral, as opposed to a late-type Sc or Sd spiral. See also Hubble Classification.
