Syn: Rio Summit. The United Nations conference on sustainable development in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, at which most of the world's political leaders acknowledged that the future of the human race required measures to achieve a balance between environmental sustainability and economic development. There was little agreement about ways to achieve this balance. The relationship of public health to sustainable development was not discussed.
