English architect, better known for his work as a journalist and writer. His Hints on Household Taste in Furniture, Upholstery, and Other Details (1868) popularized design derived from the work of Seddon, Shaw, and Street, especially in the USA where a style of Gothic domestic architecture with oversized elements, rich ornament, and a general toughness is called the Eastlake or Stick style. His A History of the Gothic Revival (1872) is an important and perceptive study.
