(orig. Ger. title Die im Schatten leben)
Ballet in one act with choreography by Gore, music by Britten, and design by H. Heckroth. Premiered 29 Jan. 1958 by Frankfurt Ballet, Frankfurt, with Hinton, Paul Herbinger, and Wolfgang Winter. This setting of Britten's Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge is one of Gore's most powerful ballets with an especially dramatic ballerina role. It tells the story of a young bride who is falsely committed to an asylum by her husband, and there becomes genuinely mad. It was revived by several companies including Harkness Ballet (1970, a version filmed for German television) and Northern Ballet Theatre (1976).
