A Filovirus, morphologically similar to Marburg virus, that causes severe haemorrhagic fever, frequently fatal. The genome is a single-stranded negative-sense RNA. Originally identified in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Ebola valley); outbreaks have so far been mostly confined to Africa. Various subtypes are now recognized.
