Was reigning in 765 when he granted a charter giving land to the bishop of Rochester. The grant was confirmed by Headberht, another king in Kent, and by Offa, indicating that the kingdom was under Mercian control. The latest charter which can be dated was granted in 779. Offa's suzerainty was very much a reality, since on one occasion he countermanded a charter which Ecgberht had authorized.
