The distance a commodity may travel before transport costs exceed the value of the freight. Economic distance can be reduced by better physical infrastructure, improvements in the institutional framework, better cost recovery and maintenance, simpler transit procedures, better information, and the reduction of unofficial payments/corruption (Crochet et al. (2004) IBRD, World Bank).
