A term referring to the inner face of the outer lipid monolayer of a membrane as visualized by the technique of freeze fracture. The P face is the complementary surface. In the case of the plasma membrane, the E face is the surface that would be seen from within the cell if the inner leaflet of phospholipids were stripped away, the P face the surface that would be seen from outside the cell if the outer monolayer of phospholipid were removed.
