the author of Life in London; or The Day and Night Scenes of Jerry Hawthorn Esq. and Corinthian Tom (1821), issued in monthly numbers from 1820, illustrated by George and Robert Cruikshank. The book is interesting for the light it throws on the manners of the period and for the many slang phrases it introduces. His son, also Pierce Egan (1814–80), was associated with him in several of his works, and wrote a vast number of novels.
