A mixture of copper silicates and one of the earliest known artificial pigments, it was used as a water-based pigment for blues and greens in ancient Egyptian wall paintings. Its use spread around the ancient Mediterranean world and it was later manufactured in Italy where it was known as Pompeian blue.
