[Ir., Eileen my love].
Irish title for a well-known love ballad that may date from the 14th century but is usually ascribed to Cearbhall Ó Dálaigh (fl. 1590–1630) in honour of Eibhlín Caomhánach, the daughter of a nearby chief; usually titled ‘Eileen Aroon’ in English. The name Eibhlín entered Ireland with the Normans (12th cent.).
