(b Breslau, 1832; d Templin, Berlin, 1905). Ger. musicologist and composer. Settled in Berlin 1853 as teacher, and gave concerts of his own comps. 1857–9. Began research into 16th- and 17th-cent. works. Prin. achievement, begun 1882, was his Biographisch-bibliographisches Quellen-Lexikon der Musiker und Musikgelehrten (10 vols., 1900–4). Wrote opera Judith and a pf. fantasia on themes from Tristan und Isolde.
