Quick Reference

(c. 1040–99)

(Arabic al-Said, ‘the lord’ and Spanish campeador, ‘champion’) Spanish hero. He was Rodrigo Díaz de Bivar, a Castilian nobleman, who was exiled after the war between the brothers Sancho II of Castile and Alfonso VI of León, becoming a mercenary captain fighting mainly for the Moors. He captured Valencia on his own behalf but was expelled in 1099, dying shortly afterwards. Many of the legends concerning him bear little relation to historical facts.
