Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

The coupling of cells by gap junctions or electrical synapses so that electrical current (and small molecules) will pass readily from one to the other. Can be detected by intracellular microelectrode recording or, indirectly, by observing the passage of dye from one cell to others. Not confined to excitable cells. See also metabolic cooperation.
