Acronym for Electronic Numerical Integrator and Calculator. The first general-purpose electronic calculator, designed and built by John W. Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert Jr. at the University of Pennsylvania's Moore School during the period 1943–46. Originally designed for the production of ballistic tables for the Second World War, the machine was not completed until after the war ended. It was widely used for scientific computation until the early 1950s. See also UNIVAC.
