Franciscan. He was one of the earliest companions of St Francis. In 1232 he became third General of the Franciscan Order; his government was marked by repeated crises and despotic behaviour, and he was deposed by Gregory IX in 1239. He then supported Frederick II and was excommunicated and expelled from the Order.
