English-born missionary, educated at Cambridge, came to Boston (1631), where, as the first to preach to the Indians in their native tongue, he obtained the sobriquet “Apostle to the Indians.” His translation of the Bible into the language of the Massachuset Indians (New Testament, 1661; Old Testament, 1663) was the first complete Bible printed in the English colonies.
