*Egbert's victory over Beornwulf at Ellendun marks the transfer of overlordship within the Anglo‐Saxon kingdoms from Mercia to Wessex. Fought just south of Swindon, it gave Egbert mastery of the critical strategic area leading into the middle Thames valley.
