Aged 21, Elias joined Odhams, rising rapidly through the ranks to become a director and then chairman. Under his leadership, Odhams printed the weekly John Bull, with a circulation of 2 million at its peak. Elias also acquired and printed the Sunday People and Daily Herald. More concerned with business practice and promotion than editorial content, Elias was ennobled in 1937.
