(1888–1958), progressive Conservative politician and innovative Scottish Secretary of State. He was born into a minor Lanarkshire landowning family. Educated at Glasgow Academy and Glasgow University, he qualified in medicine. An active member of the student political community, Elliot immediately entered politics after war service, where he won the Military Cross. He sat in parliament more or less continuously from 1918 until his death.
