An island in New York Bay off Manhattan Island. Long used as an arsenal and a fort, from 1892 until 1943 it served as the main US centre for immigration control. From 1943 until 1954 it was a detention centre for deportees, until it became part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument in 1956.
