Quick Reference

Part of the cry of desolation uttered by Jesus from the cross (Mark 15: 34), a mixture of Hebrew and Aramaic, which are the first words of Ps. 22. Although some commentators point out that this psalm ends in a note of hope and that Jesus would have had in mind the whole psalm, most scholars hold that the words represent Jesus' total identification with humanity and its despair. Jesus feels abandoned even by God his Father (cf. 2 Cor. 5: 21).
