A totipotent cell (ES cell) cultured from an early embryo. They have excited much interest because of the possibility of modifying them by genetic engineering in vitro and then producing a chimeric embryo, a transgenic animal. Their therapeutic potential in degenerative disease has been much discussed, though more rarely demonstrated.
