More than 30 such diseases have been identified since 1970, demonstrating that the ecological relationship of humans and pathogenic organisms continues to evolve. Recently emerged infections include HIV/AIDS, Legionnaires disease, Lyme disease, several varieties of tropical viral hemorrhagic fevers, hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), and avian influenza.
