A term used to describe newly identified diseases. More than 30 such diseases have been identified since 1970, demonstrating that the ecological relationship of humans and pathogenic organisms continues to evolve. Recently emerged infections include HIV/AIDS, Legionnaires disease, Lyme disease, several varieties of tropical viral hemorrhagic fevers, hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), and avian influenza.
