A type II integral nuclear membrane protein (254 aa) that forms part of a nuclear protein complex consisting of the barrier-to-autointegration factor (BAF), the nuclear lamina, nuclear actin, and other associated proteins; apparently links A-type lamins to the inner nuclear envelope. In the heart emerin is also associated with intercalated discs. Emerin is missing or defective in Emery–Dreifuss muscular dystrophy.
