An alkaloid derived from ipecac root (variously named Cephaelis ipecacuanha, Uragoga ipecacuanha, Psychotria ipecacuanha); used in the treatment of amoebiasis and as an emetic. Irreversibly blocks protein synthesis by inhibiting translocation of peptidyl-tRNA from the A-site to the P-site on the ribosome. Inhibits DNA replication in the early S phase and induces apoptosis in leukaemic cells. Emetine-resistant Chinese hamster ovary cell lines have been extensively studied.
