Quick Reference

An index of emotional intelligence analogous to the IQ index of conventional intelligence. A number of scales to measure the emotional quotient were developed following the publication in 1995 of a best-selling book Emotional Intelligence by the US psychologist and journalist Daniel Goleman (born 1946). Early measures of this variable were based on self-report measures of individuals' perceptions or appraisals of their own competencies and experiences in areas of functioning associated with emotional intelligence; development of more valid measures focusing on the key competencies began in the late 1990s.
