Is the doctrine that employees can be hired and fired at will by the employer. Employment at will still prevails as a legal principle in the USA where non-union employees have very little protection from arbitrary dismissal. However, in the UK and other European countries, there are legal safeguards for employees to ensure that they are not dismissed unreasonably or without good cause. The law of unfair dismissal is particularly important in regulating the employer's behaviour in this regard.
