Quick Reference

Is a specialist officer of the UK's HM Revenue and Customs who has responsibility for enforcing the National Minimum Wage (NMW). Enforcement officers are empowered to issue enforcement notices requiring employers to pay workers at the NMW and also to pay arrears within a set period. If the notice is not complied with, the enforcement officer can initiate proceedings before an Employment Tribunal on behalf of the workers to recover the money and the employer is also liable to a financial penalty of twice the wages unpaid for each day of non-compliance with the enforcement notice. It is estimated that enforcement officers identify £2.5 million of wage arrears each year, equivalent to about £300 per worker.
