n. inflammation of the small intestine, usually causing diarrhoea. Infective enteritis is caused by viruses or bacteria; radiation enteritis is caused by X-rays used for radiation therapy of pelvic and other malignancies. It can cause fistula or stricture formation and malabsorption. See also Crohn’s disease (regional enteritis), gastroenteritis.
