entrance region

Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

The region upstream of a localized wind-speed maximum in a jet stream, where the air is accelerating. This causes convergence in the left half of the entrance region, a compensating subsidence from stratospheric levels, and divergence at the surface. The overall vertical circulation tends to promote frontolysis (as seen in the weakening of the cold front in the rear of a depression.)
