entropy coding

Quick Reference

Techniques used to achieve data compression which do not take account of the semantics of the data: that is, they do not depend on whether the data is from a video file, audio file, or some laboratory experiment. The two main techniques which are described by this term are statistical encoding, where the statistical properties of the data are used to guide compression, and repetitive sequence suppression, where repetitive data is replaced by a character or sequence of characters which is shorter than the sequence.
