A large family of bacteria, which are Gram-negative and rod-shaped. They are chemo-organotrophic and can grow in the presence or absence of air. There are many genera, found as parasites and pathogens in a wide range of organisms from plants to humans. Many can also live saprotrophically, e.g. in soil and water.
