The extent to which all groups of people in a region or country (regardless of race, ethnicity, economic status, or income) receive equal treatment and protection under environmental statues, regulations, and practices. Unlike environmental racism, equity also considers the disproportionate burden of risk that any group of people (defined by gender, age, income, or race) is exposed to. Also known as environmental justice. See equity.
