A detailed written statement that describes the results of an environmental impact assessment of a proposed large‐scale project, which usually includes a description of the project and of the environment that would be affected, an assessment of the important effects of the project on environment, a justification of the project, and a non‐technical summary. An EIS is required for all major federal projects in the USA under the National Environmental Policy Act, and for all major projects in the European Union under a 1988 directive.
