Quick Reference

A European polar-orbiting satellite launched in 2002 and designed to monitor various atmospheric and surface properties, in part to ensure continuity with the measurements made by the ERS-1 and ERS-2 European Remote Sensing satellites. The highly sophisticated instruments include the AATSR (Advanced Along-Track Scanning Radiometer), GOMOS (Global Ozone Monitoring by Occultation of Stars), and SCHIAMACHY (Scanning Imaging Absorption Spectrometer for Atmospheric Chartography). It will be superseded by the Sentinel-1 satellites (see Sentinel), the first of which is scheduled for launch in 2011.
