Endogenous neuroactive steroids that act as positive allosteric modulators of the GABAA receptor/chloride ion channel complex. The name is a contraction of ‘epiallopregnanolone’, a progesterone metabolite. Epalons have anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, and sedative–hypnotic properties and a synthetic variant, ganaxolone, has been tested for the treatment of epilepsy.
