Quick Reference

A member of the epidermal growth factor (EGF) family that activates ErbB1 and ErbB4 homodimers and all possible heterodimeric ErbB complexes. Will stimulate the proliferation of fibroblasts, hepatocytes, smooth muscle cells, and keratinocytes but inhibits the growth of several tumour-derived epithelial cell lines. Epiregulin and amphiregulin are not expressed in normal colonic mucosa, but are clearly detectable in adenomas and carcinomas. Epiregulin-deficient mice develop chronic dermatitis although wound healing is normal, and epiregulin may have a role in immune/inflammatory-related responses of keratinocytes and macrophages.
