One of the epidermal growth factor (EGF) superfamily (152 aa), a ligand for the EGF receptors, ErbB1 and ErbB2, and a potent epithelial mitogen implicated in wound healing. The transmembrane precursor is processed by the metallopeptidase ADAM17 which releases the soluble bioactive ectodomain. Production can be stimulated by phorbol esters, phosphatase inhibitors, and calcium influx.
