(family Onagraceae)

A genus of herbs, usually of open habitats, in which the leaves are simple, and opposite or alternate. The flowers are generally solitary but some are in racemes. Numerous seeds, without endosperm, are produced from the capsule with a plume of hairs at the chalaza. There are about 200 species, of north-ern and southern temperate and Arctic regions.
